The New York Yankees is a name synonymous with baseball. Being the world’s most successful baseball team with over 25 World Series championships and well over 30 League Pennants under their belt puts the Yankees at legendary status.
Beginning in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees did not become so until they were moved to New York and renamed in 1903. (At the time there were arguments with their proximity to the already New York team, the Giants). From there on out, they became an amazingly strong team with some of the best players the game of baseball has ever seen.
Babe Ruth, ‘The Great Bambino, the Sultan of Swat, Babe’ and one of the first 5 players in the baseball hall of fame, played for the New York Yankees from 1920 until 1935 when he was traded to the braves. “Joltin” Joe Dimagio became an all-star, providing means for the New York Yankees to win several more championships from 1936. Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, and Mickey Mantle joined the team to build up the New York Yankee’s record even further. Today, players Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter support the still strong performing New York baseball team.
The New York Yankees have always and will always play in Yankee Stadium. However, the year 2008 will be their last in the historical ball playing field. A new Yankee Stadium is being completed across the street from the classic field, where the New York Yankees will begin to play in 2009.
